RDAP lookup

Look up registration data over RDAP (WHOIS 2.0): registrar, key dates, status, nameservers and abuse contacts for a domain, IP range or autonomous system.

RDAP is the new WHOIS

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) returns the same registration data as WHOIS, but as structured data over HTTPS from the registry itself. ICANN made it the official source for generic top-level domains in January 2025, replacing WHOIS.

MtrXTools finds the right RDAP server from IANA's directory and shows the registrar, key dates, status codes, nameservers and abuse contacts for a domain, an IP address or range, or an autonomous system number such as AS13335.

Reading domain status codes

  • clientTransferProhibited: a normal registrar lock against unauthorised transfers.
  • serverHold or clientHold: the domain is suspended and doesn't resolve.
  • redemptionPeriod or pendingDelete: the registration expired and the domain is about to be released.

Questions

Why is the owner's name hidden?
Since GDPR most registries redact personal contact details. The registrar and an abuse contact are still shown; the registrar can relay messages to the owner.
Some domains return no RDAP data. Why?
A few country-code registries don't run RDAP yet. Use the WHOIS tool for those.
How do I find when a domain expires?
Look for the expiration event in the dates section. To get reminded before it lapses, add the domain to the Expiry calendar.
Can I look up who owns an IP address?
Yes. Enter an IP address or range to see the regional registry's record: the organisation holding the block, its allocation dates and abuse contacts for reporting misuse.
