552 5.2.2 The recipient's inbox is out of storage space
The recipient's mailbox is full
Seen in Gmail (452 4.2.2 when temporary), Postfix, Exim, most mail servers
The recipient's mailbox has used up its storage quota, so the server will not accept more mail until space is freed.
Common causes
- The recipient has not cleared old mail or large attachments.
- An abandoned mailbox that nobody reads has filled up.
- On Microsoft 365, 5.2.2 "Submission quota exceeded" means something different: the sender hit Exchange Online sending limits.
How to fix it
- Contact the recipient by another channel and ask them to free up space.
- Retry later; a 452 4.2.2 is temporary and your server will retry automatically.
- Remove long-full addresses from mailing lists.
